Rodent control, essential for urban agriculture ( Archive )

Senior Lecturer at the National Museum of Sorbonne University mentioned that one of the key ways to prevent an infestation in urban farm operations is to have good farm hygiene which starts with the development of a Good Agricultural Practices plans to ensure practices that promote food safety.

Associate Professor in National Museum of Natural History of Sorbonne University, Dr. Violaine Nicolas explained that Rodent study aims to better understand the factors that led to the diversification of small mammals from the methodological point of view. It relies on the construction of molecular phylogenies, as well as morphometric and phylogeographic analyzes.

“Rodents cause millions of dollars in damages to field crops, stored grain and farm equipment each year. In addition, they are the major carrier for more than 60 diseases that are transmissible to humans, companion animals, and livestock,” she said. “Rodents pose one of the most serious threats to food production worldwide, but indiscriminately removing rodents from ecosystems is not always the best management option”.

Dr. Nicolas added, “Traditional approaches to rodent population and damage management have relied on direct reduction of populations using rodenticide baits or rodent traps and modifying the habitat to be less suitable for rodents”.

The International Conference on Integrative Approaches of Rodent Studies organized by the Institute of Applied Zoology and Biology Department of the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM), in collaboration with National Museum of Natural History of Paris.
