In recent years, there has been a great deal of research to gain insight into the techniques of insect farming in enclosed controlled environments by different countries. These researches are done for the purpose of providing human and animal protein needs, the pest control or biological attack research.
The project of "Developing Technical Knowledge of Grasshopper Mass Production" has started in November 2018 by Ferdowsi University of Mashhad under the supervision of Dr. Seyed Hadi Ebrahimi, Faculty of Animal Sciences. This project commissioned by “Behin Satrap Toos” company.
Using the technical knowledge developed in the project, the contractor intends to build the first grasshopper-protected breeding center in Mashhad. The human consumption of grasshopper in different countries on the one hand and the distrust of wild grasshopper due to their potential for contamination with pesticides on the other hand have created a demand for producing healthy and non-toxic species of this insect as a source of protein. This project opens a clear horizon for exports of products made from this vegetarian insect.
