A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM) and the Institute for Geo-hydrological Protection (IRPI) of Italian National Research Council for mutual scientific cooperation on 3 October 2021.
The activity of this center is focused on protection against geohydrological hazards such as subsidence, sinking, erosion, and other related hazards. The MOU allows the two sides to focus on joint scientific activities and exchange of professors and students. Scientific activities and joint research projects to solve the crisis should be carried out on the issues that are considered as environmental challenges and dangers of Iran's ecosystems.
The main axes of this MOU focus on issues related to soil erosion, protection and restoration, soil geomorphology, soil degradation, and ecogeomorphology, modeling of geohydrological hazards, especially underground and tunnel erosion, subsidence and expansion of sinkholes, and risk management and resolving these crises. The exchange of professors and the students, holding joint scientific courses and seminars, as well as conducting joint research and the possibility of joint use of facilities, tools, and research equipment, are among the expectations and activities in the MOU.
This MOU was initiated by Dr. Adel Sepehr, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment of FUM and also the Director of the Environmental Hazards and Ecosystem Management Department of the Water and Environment Research Institute of FUM as coordinator and scientific liaison with the Italian side.
