The meeting of the Presidents of Iran and Afghanistan Universities with the presence of Prof. Mohammad Kafi, President of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM), Prof. Mohammad Osman Babury, President of Kabul University, Prof. Hossein Salimi, President of Allameh Tabataba'i University, Dr. Abdullah Fayez, President of Herat University, Dr. Gholamreza Rezaei, President of University of Sistan and Baluchestan, and Prof. Khalilullah Kliwal, President of Balkh University, was hosted by Allameh Tabataba'i University on Thursday, December 17, 2020. This virtual meeting was held to exchange experience in the field of the impact of academic research on society.
Prof. Kafi, the president of FUM, in this meeting, considered research education as part of the mission of universities and said: "The social impact of the university is to train researchers who are familiar with society." The two countries of Iran and Afghanistan must act in the field of scientific authority and revive their civilized position in creating knowledge. The ecology, which can make the results of these researches efficient for society, requires special structures and laws that facilitate the commercialization of academic ideas.
FUM has tried to pave the way by creating the discourse of "governing society based on knowledge" and by establishing technology development centers and communication with industry. The Center for Advanced Technologies, the Center for Tourism and Pilgrimage Studies, the establishment of the R&D department of factories at FUM, and the establishment of a technology campus have been among the university's efforts. The appointment of a joint professor for Afghan students based on the common issues of the two countries, the establishment of the Center for Khorasan Studies and Mining, the establishment of joint master's and doctoral courses are among the proposals of FUM to strengthen research and academic relations between Iran and Afghanistan.
