The SCIMAGO International Evaluation Institutions Rankings system (SIR) annually evaluates the performance of the world's universities and research institutes. The results of this system, due to its validity and antiquity, have always been observed by universities.

This system presents its results in the form of a general and thematic ranking of universities based on 17 indicators, which are classified into three groups of indicators: "research", "innovation" and "social". It should be noted that the results of 2022 of the SCIMAGO system are related to the performance of universities in the years 2016-2020.

According to the results of the overall ranking, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, with a rank of 473 among the world's higher education institutions, has climbed 49 steps compared to the previous year. In the Middle East, with 17 steps, it ranks 44th, and nationally, with 2 steps, it ranks 9th among the universities under the Ministry of Education in the country. Among the comprehensive universities of the country, as of last year, is ranked 5th after the universities of Tehran, Tarbiat Modares, Shiraz, and Tabriz.

In thematic rankings, FUM has had an effective presence at the national level and has been able in the subjects of "Arts and Humanities (rank 3), business, management and accounting (rank 4), veterinary (rank 5), psychology (rank 6), Social sciences (ranked 8), agriculture and life sciences (ranked 8) and engineering (ranked 9) should be among the top 10 universities in the country.
