FUM Researchers Create Bionic Arm ( Archive )

Scientists from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM) in cooperation with University of China and Mashhad University of Medical Sciences have designed and created a bionic hand which each of its fingers can be controlled separately.

one of the members of FUM research group, Javad Mahdavian, stated that recipients are able to use an armband filled with pressure sensors to track movements in a user's remaining muscles.

Bionic limbs have evolved dramatically over the years to include mind-controlled arms and artificial hands that "feel" via something called M.A.S.S. Impact (Muscle Activity Sensor Strip), which uses an armband filled with pressure sensors to track movements in a user's remaining muscles.

As he explained, there are 8 EMG sensors that sense signals transmitted to the muscles from the brain, then it sends information to a computer via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Information will be processed and the computer determined which finger should be moved.

Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM), located in Mashhad, the largest city in the East of Iran, was founded in 1949 which is one of the largest universities to enroll international students in Iran. At present, FUM is composed of 12 faculties, about 850 faculty members, over 20000 students.
