Successful Implementation of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad Research Project in Binak Oilfield

The project "Preliminary screening of smart water extraction method in Bangestan reservoir of Binak field" was commissioned by the National Company of Southern Oil Fields at the beginning of 2019 in the Smart Water Technology Center of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM), and successfully finished in early 2020.

Screening of smart water injection in a land reservoir was performed for the first time in the country in the framework of this project. The director of this project is Dr. Hossein Ali Akhlaghi Amiri, a faculty member of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering of FUM. Laboratory studies related to this project were performed in the oil extraction laboratory in the smart water center of the Oil and Gas Research Institute of FUM. Some of the laboratory equipment related to this project, including the Core Flooding System and High-Temperature Spontaneous Imbibition Setup, has been designed and manufactured by Omid Petro Energy Khavaran Knowledge-Based Company.

Smart water is water with an ionic composition different from oil tank water, which increases the oil recovery coefficient from the tank through physical and chemical interactions in the tank. The method of smart water injection has received serious attention in the world during the last three decades and its results have been particularly impressive in fractured carbonate reservoirs, in which the application of over-harvesting methods is always challenged.

Binak oilfield is a saturated oil field in Bushehr province and adjacent to the Persian Gulf, which has 2.7 billion barrels of primary oil in place. The field is under strong water drift, for which a recovery factor of 24% is predicted, and so far about 70% of its extractable oil has been extracted. Due to the proximity of this field to the Persian Gulf, the Persian Gulf Seawater was selected as the basic smart water in this project. The results of various analyzes confirmed the positive effect of Persian Gulf water injection on increasing oil recovery coefficient. News of the successful implementation of this project was released at the end of last year on the website of the National Company for the South Oil Fields in this link.

Additional studies of advanced screening and simulation as well as pilot testing are the requirements for the implementation of this overdraft method that will be followed in the research project by FUM, entitled "conducting research and technological studies to develop technologies to optimize production processes and increase the coefficient of harvest in Binak field". Also, according to the proposal of the National Seminar on Evaluation of Smart Water Injection Method in Carbonate Reservoirs, it will be held at the National Company of Southern Oil Fields with the cooperation of the Smart Water Technology Center of FUM.
