In the latest results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2022, Iranian universities have been able to be ranked among 51 top disciplines in 18 subjects among the top universities in the world. Compared to the results of 2021, they have been ranked for the first time in the field of environment.

The study of the situation of the top comprehensive universities in the country in these results shows the active role of the University of Tehran (in 15 disciplines) and then the universities of Shiraz (in 4 disciplines) and Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM) (in 2 disciplines).

Accordingly, FUM has succeeded in obtaining a rank in the fields of Petroleum Engineering (ranked 101-150) and Mechanical Engineering (ranked 451-500) in the field of engineering and technology. It is worth mentioning that FUM has been ranked among the top universities in the world in the field of mechanics for the first time.

It should be noted that the QS rating system is one of the international ranking systems. One of the most important rankings that this database conducts annually is the evaluation of universities in 5 subject areas of art and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences and social sciences, and management. It is based on five indicators: "University reputation, evaluation of employers, number of citations per article, h-index, and international cooperation of the university (which was added to the evaluation indicators of this system for the first time this year)". These indicators are identified with a weight appropriate to each subject area, to introduce the best universities. Some of the required information is obtained through the Scopus citation database and some are obtained from survey information.
